4625kHz УВБ-76 SIMUVAC
My childhood home in View Royal, British Columbia, Canada is located near a large naval base on Canada’s Pacific Coast. At night, one can see a reflection of its numerous lights against the surrounding inlet which conjure apparitions that have long been imprinted in my mind.
4625kHz УВБ-76 SIMUVAC is one of my recent pieces which results from the association of these images with their corresponding imagined sounds. Using military shortwave radio broadcasts as a guide, I devise a musical language and structure which explores superimposition, periodicity and aperiodicity, unity and fragmentation. The title of this piano sonata is a combination of a notable shortwave radio number station channel UVB-76 and SIMUVAC, a fictional group of personnel practising simulated disaster management in the novel White Noise by Don DeLillo.
The piece consists of 3 movements performed without pause:
I. Aria- Recitation- Ricercare
II. Nottorno
III. Dans un vertige
